How to write a visa cover letter that is clear and honest
What to include in a visa cover letter: who you are, the purpose, dates, funds, ties to home and the documents you attach. Includes a free generator.
A cover letter is a one-page summary of your application. It helps the officer understand your trip quickly. It does not replace documents, but a clear letter makes your file easier to approve.
What to include
- Your full name, address and passport number, the date, and the embassy or consulate you are writing to.
- The purpose of the trip and the exact dates.
- Where you will stay and who is paying.
- Your job or status and your ties to your home country (job, family, property, studies).
- A statement that you will leave before the visa ends.
- A list of the documents you attach.
Style tips
- Keep it to one page and use short, simple sentences.
- Only state facts you can prove with a document.
- Sign it by hand or digitally and keep dates consistent with the rest of the file.
- Do not copy a letter you found online word for word; officers see the same text many times.
Check the official checklist
This guide is general information, not legal advice, and it does not guarantee a visa. Rules differ by country, visa type and consulate, and they change. Follow the checklist of the embassy or visa centre you apply to.
