Do you need a paid flight ticket for a Schengen visa? Reservation vs ticket
Most Schengen consulates ask for proof of travel plans, not a paid ticket. What a flight reservation is, what it is not, and when a ticket is required.
A common myth is that you must buy a fully paid, non-refundable ticket before applying for a visa. For most Schengen applications this is not what consulates ask for, and many advise against it, because the visa can be refused.
What most consulates ask for
- Most Schengen consulate checklists ask for a "flight reservation", "itinerary" or "proof of transport" that shows your planned entry and exit dates.
- Many consulates and visa centres explicitly say you should not buy tickets before the visa is approved.
- What matters is that the booking is real and can be checked. A reservation with an airline booking reference (PNR) that can be looked up on the airline website shows a real plan.
What a flight reservation is, and is not
- It is a booking held with the airline for a limited time. It shows your route, dates and a reference you can check.
- It is not a ticket. You cannot board a flight with it. It expires at the deadline shown on the document.
- A reservation does not guarantee a visa. The consulate decides on your whole file.
When a paid ticket may be required
- Some countries, some visa types and a few consulates do ask for a confirmed or paid ticket. Read the checklist.
- If your checklist says "paid ticket", "e-ticket" or "ticket issued", a reservation will not meet it.
- Airlines can also ask for onward travel proof when you board; a reservation or ticket for your onward flight can serve that purpose.
Safe way to do it
- Read your consulate checklist first.
- Use real flights and dates that match your hotel booking and insurance.
- Verify the PNR yourself on the airline website before you submit.
- Buy the real ticket after you receive the visa.
