Common reasons for a Schengen visa refusal and how to avoid them
The most common reasons Schengen visas are refused: unclear purpose, weak funds, missing insurance, inconsistent documents, weak ties to home.
Most refusals come from missing or inconsistent documents, not from small mistakes. Knowing the common reasons helps you prepare a stronger file.
Common reasons
- The purpose and conditions of the stay are not justified or are unclear.
- Not enough funds, or the source of funds is unclear.
- Proof of accommodation or travel plan is missing, or does not match the other documents.
- Travel insurance is missing or too low.
- Not enough proof that you will leave the Schengen Area on time (weak ties to your home country).
- Documents that look false or unreliable.
- Passport too old, too short on validity or has no blank pages.
If you are refused
- You must be given a written reason and information on how to appeal.
- Read the reason carefully. Fix the problem and apply again, or appeal if you think the decision was wrong.
- Do not reapply with the same documents and expect a different result.
Check the official checklist
This guide is general information, not legal advice, and it does not guarantee a visa. Rules differ by country, visa type and consulate, and they change. Follow the checklist of the embassy or visa centre you apply to.
